This is quite personal but I have been asked to put it in my
blog (as I was told) to perhaps help or encourage someone else? --I first typed
it in Jan 9,1999 while preparing a Lesson for Priesthood. W.R. Baldwin
TO LOVE A WIFE
I thought as I sit at my desk one day,
Life has not always been as it is today.
Life in the beginning was prayer and hope
As in inactivity her husband did grope.
They married for love, that was plain to see
And she knew of his Church inactivity.
He was born to roam mountains, to hunt and fish,
For him to be active in Church, was her greatest wish.
Could this rebel who was raised in a mountain of coal
Become active in Church. Could he change his soul?
He loved her she knew. Many times he would say,
I loved you today and our loves here to stay.
She did not push him, to go to Church or to pray,
But her unconditional love soon showed him the way.
He was afraid to go to the church house door,
He did not understand, did not know the score?
His wife’s patience and love he knew he could trust.
He would try Church once, He knew that he must.
He went one day and then one day more
And he found in this Church, much, much more.
As the years went by, love and activity grew strong
Many things he had done he now knew were wrong.
She waited for him as to his meeting he went.
And soon she became Relief Society President.
The children soon came, to a home full of love,
A home now blessed by our Father above.
My wife was the mortar, which made this home strong
As more and more children kept coming along.
As all do, we struggled with adversity and pain
But our commitment to each other never did wane.
He could not understand why she never did rest
When she cleaned a clean house! Sometimes he’s a pest.
Because of my wife, an eternal commitment we share,
It helps is to show love and to show that we care.
After 40 years together, we still try to improve.
But our love for each other we don’t have to prove.
At times she is eccentric, he will tell you alright.
And sometimes he doesn’t do everything right.
But because an eternal marriage, in the Temple was made,
They don’t have to worry or even be afraid.
Our love can bring wondrous joy in this life.
We can overcome friction and quarrels and strife.
Each day our love grows, for 40 years now, or more
Because in an eternal commitment, we vowed, love evermore.
The Temple was the key, our covenant and vow.
I sometimes giggle as we look at each other now.
We are wrinkled, with glasses, and sometimes we sleep
In a rocking chair, as we dream of mountains we leap.
There is no Obstacle in front that we cannot surmount,
No matter our age, because that does not count.
My love is so solid I would give up my life,
If I had to do that, to keep my kind loving wife.
